The King of Navarre, and his three friends, Berowne, Longaville and Dumaine, all swear themselves to three years of study, abstaining from all distractions, particularly of the female kind.

They are confounded, on signing the vow, when Berowne remembers that the Princess of France and her three ladies, Rosaline, Maria, and Katharine, accompanied by Boyet, are on an embassy to Navarre’s court. Distraught with love for these women, the four Lords decide to betray their oath and woo the ladies, disguising themselves as Russians as to not make the ladies aware they have broken their vows- but Boyet tells the ladies beforehand. The ladies decide to have fun at the Lord’s expense, changing their identities in mockery of the Lord’s deceptive plans.
