Rainer Werner Fassbinder is one of the most ruthless observers of human nature the cinema and theatre have ever known. His extraordinarily prolific output in the 1970's – 41 films, as well as plays, in 14 years – almost certainly helped contribute to his early death aged just 37. He often returned to the subject of the outsider shunned by society, and his own feelings of rejection and alienation infuse much of his work.  Fassbinder's favourite target is the moral bankruptcy that he saw in West Germany’s postwar years. “Every decent director has only one subject, and finally only makes the same film over and over again. My subject is the exploitability of feelings, whoever might be the one exploiting them. It never ends. Whether the state exploits patriotism, or whether in a couple’s relationship, one partner destroys the other.”  This production features scenes from Ali - Fear Eats the Soul, Pioneers in Ingolstadt and Blood on the Throat of the Cat, woven in with music and stills from his films.

"I'd like to be for cinema what Shakespeare was for theatre, Marx for politics and Freud for psychology - someone after whom nothing is as it used to be." RW Fassbinder
